Obtaining Your Free FSU Internet Account

All full-time FSU students are entitled to a free FSU Internet account. Your free Internet account can be obtained from the ACNS (Academic Computer Network Services) We page through a three step process.

  1. Regiser for your FSU Internet Account
  2. Donload free Internet software
  3. Set up your computer for Internet access and install the Internet software.

If you don't own a computer, you need only complete the first step after which you may access the Internet through public computer labs on campus. Your account will provide you with email and other Internet resources.

If you do own a computer, in addition to an email account, steps 2 and 3 will provide you with several popular Internet programs, including:

Also included is a program which copies all of the above programs to your computer and documentation that explains how to connect your computer to the Internet and how to install the software..

Registering For Your FSU Internet Account

The registering process is done on-line and can be accomplished from any computer with Web access.

You will be given a user name and password. Write them down and keep them in a safe private place. Your new account is on the garnet.acns.fsu.edu network. Your email address is your-user-name@garnet.acns.fsu.edu.Your email server is garnet.acns.fsu.edu, your news server is news.fsu.edu. Once your account is activated, you can telnet to garnet.acns.fsu.edu and login with your username and password.

Downloading Free Internet Software

ACNS provides you with the most popular Internet software to download for free. The software takes up five floppy disks and can be downloaded from any computer with Web access.

Installing the Free Software

Install.bat will copy all of the program files to a directory on your hard drive. Once the installation process is complete, read the instruction file on installation disk 1 (win95ppp.doc for Win95 users, manual.hqx for Mac users). These instructions walk you through connecting to the Internet via PPP and installing all of the free software. Warning: this can be an incredibly tedious process. Set aside a few hours and read through the instructions carefully paying attention to detail. It helps to have an experienced user on hand. I also recommend that once you get Netscape up and running, you use it to download updated versions of Netscape, Eudora and WS_FTP.

Good Luck!
