Well, it’s finally happened. We’ve run out of Internet addresses. The current IP protocol utilizes 32 bits to provide over four billion Internet addresses. This past week the last of those addresses was assigned. Fortunately for us, IPv6 has arrived to save the day with 128 bit addresses that support around 50 thousand trillion trillion addresses per person on the planet. That should hold us over for a little while. Businesses and organizations are rushing to upgrade their systems to support IP v6.
